PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
July 19th, 2024 – I have had the privilege of visiting Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, twice in my life. It unequivocally lives up to its reputation as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, thanks to its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant cultural heritage. Around each corner I discovered a new, intriguing frame, waiting to be captured.
Prague Castle, the largest coherent castle complex in the world, majestically watches over the city. This significant cultural institution serves as the official residence of the president. Strolling through its grounds, it is awe-inspiring to witness over a thousand years of history nestled in its nooks and crannies. I spent hours admiring the intricate details and capturing it’s splendor through my lens.
Prominently situated within the castle grounds is Saint Vitus Cathedral. Taking nearly 600 years to complete, its Gothic architecture, with towering arches, stained glass windows, and a Renaissance-style gallery and spire, is utterly breathtaking.
The iconic Charles Bridge, the only connection between Prague Castle and the Old Town until 1841, is now a pedestrian-only zone. Thousands of tourists and locals flock daily to admire its statues, street artists, and musicians. During my first visit, the bridge was bustling with people, but my second visit during the lingering pandemic offered a quieter experience. Late at night, I captured one of my favorite photos ever of my cousin and his girlfriend on this historic bridge.
Prague boasts several vantage points that offer stunning panoramic views of the city. From atop the Petrin Tower and the Zizkov TV Tower, one can truly appreciate how the city unfolds on both sides of the Vltava River.
Near the Zizkov TV Tower, I stumbled upon the Old Jewish Cemetery, with its ancient tombstones dating back to 1439. The light was perfect, and the layers of gravestones provided a rich depth of field for my shots.
On the east side of the river, the cobblestone streets lead to the Old Town Square, where the medieval Astronomical Clock stands. Renowned for its complex mechanics, including moving apostles and other figures, the clock attracts crowds on the hour, every hour, to witness its show. Dominating the square with its twin spires, the Church of Our Lady before Týn is an architectural marvel and a treasure trove of Prague’s historical and cultural legacy. Each spire is topped by eight unique smaller spires in two layers of four.
The winding alleys and lanes surrounding the Old Town exude old-world charm, with intricate details embedded in their doorways, windows, street lamps, and signs. Walking through Prague, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of humility, reflecting on all the people who have lived there over the millennia of its existence.
